Roundup: What’s happening in LGBTQ Los Angeles

Here’s an overview of other happenings in LGBTQ Los Angeles and what’s being covered by local LGBTQ writers/media:

  • The L.A. Bi Task Force is conducting a community needs assessment survey on bisexual, pansexual and fluid-identified people. The online survey will be open for responses until August 31.

  • The #PowerOn campaign is taking donations of laptops, tablets and/or smart phones through  ‘LGBT Spirit Day’ on October 17. Donated items will “be distributed to LGBTQ resource centers across the US, so that LGBTQ teens can gain instant access to online resources,” according to the press release.

Hello, Spectrum readers! My apologies for the long break between posts! Life got rather busy with other things, including NLGJA-LA (the local chapter of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association). Since my last post, NLGJA-LA happenings have included:

  • We awarded our 2014 scholarships at the LGBT Center’s scholarships night! Congrats to this year’s recipients, Kevin O’Keeffe and Hannah Beausang (pictured with NLGJA-LA co-presidents Lauren Jow and Greg Hernandez and me)!scholarships
  • NLGJA national held its L.A. Exclusive fundraiser in L.A.exclusive
  • Last week, NLGJA-LA awarded our 2014 Excellence in Journalism Awards! It was our first year to present these awards, and we did so at a mixer that also marked the end of Greg Hernandez’s NLGJA-LA presidency. Thanks for all your work, Greg!A BIG congratulations and kudos to all of our award winners! It was such a pleasure to read, review and judge entries. A list of winners, along with links to their award-winning work, is available on the NLGJA-LA website here. Take a look! Here’s a pic of the winners:winners

Transgender 101 Panel

L.A. Pride transgender 101 panel for media.

Christopher Street West held a transgender 101 panel for media on Thursday evening at ONE Archives. My friend Calvin Fleming organized the event, which was sponsored by several media groups (including the L.A. chapter of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association). GLAAD’s Nick Adams moderated the discussion, which featured panelists RiKu Matsuda (host of Flip the Script on KPFK), Drian Juarez (Transgender Economic Empowerment Project at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center; and Jaye Johnson (West Hollywood Transgender Advisory Board). Thanks to the panelists, co-sponosors and all who attended!
